I had my very first Spam Musubi when I visited Hawaii years ago, and it was absolutely delicious. Spam Musubi is a very popular snack in Hawaii that made with a slice of browned Spam on top of a block of rice then wrapped in nori (seaweed). It looks like sushi but it’s eaten like a sandwich.
Last January when I tried to come up with a list of easy and delicious party snacks ideas for Stephanie’s 1st birthday party, my sister Whitney threw out this “Spam Musubi” idea and it made it to my final list.
Spam Musubi is fairly easy to make and fun to eat, it’s one of the perfect party snacks.
Ingredients:
- 1 can of Spam
- 3 cups of uncooked sushi rice
- Soy sauce
- Sugar
- Furikake (optional)
Slice the Spam into eight to ten even pieces—based on your preference.
Lay the slices of Spam on a sauté pan, turn up the heat to medium.
Let it cook about 1 minute on each side . Pour soy sauce & sugar mixture over the Spam.
Cook till the Spam is caramelized with the sauce. Remove Spam from the pan.
Cut the nori sheet in half lengthwise, and lay it down on a clean surface. Place the musubi-maker on the middle of the nori. Fill the mold with rice and press flat until the rice is 2 to 3 inches high. Use the musubi-maker handle to press down firmly on the rice, and then top it with slices of Spam.
Give another firm press with both hands. Continue to press down with one hand, and use the other hand to life the mold upward.
Remove the handle. Wrap nori around the Spam and rice, use a few grains of rice to seal the ends. Cut and serve!!
Optional: season rice with furikake for extra flavor.
